Gothia Cup

Intercups MX from Mexico participates in Gothia Cup for the second time this year

The Mexican team kicked off the tournament in impressive fashion, determined to bring the Gothia Cup trophy back to Cancun from Gothenburg.

In January earlier this year, the first edition of Gothia Cup Cancun was held in Mexico, with Intercups MX serving as the host club. The tournament primarily welcomed teams from the American continents to the idyllic paradise-city on the Mexican west coast.

Gothia Cup Cancun plays a crucial role for youth football in the Americas. Emilio Herrera, the head coach of Intercups MX, is very pleased with the collaboration with Gothia Cup.
– We are very, very happy to have welcomed teams from so many countries to Gothia Cup Cancun in Mexico. Mexican youth football is very good. However, it's important to get the chance to face strong teams from other countries as well. Hopefully, there will be even more countries and teams in Mexico next year, he says.

Thanks to the successful tournament at home, as well as an equally successful tournament tour in Sweden and Finland, the coach has good reasons to have high expectations for this year's participation in Gothia Cup in Gothenburg.
– We have won at home in Mexico, and we also won all three tournaments we played in Scandinavia before Gothia Cup. It is no secret that we are here to win again, he says.

During Intercups MX B15 team's debut match against Hammarby IF FF 2, the players proved that the coach's high expectations are justified. It was a well-oiled Mexican machinery that easily broke through the Stockholm team's defense time and time again at SKF-arena this afternoon. Before the final whistle, Intercups MX had scored six goals. Forward Domenico Giacopello himself scored four of them.
– It felt great to help the team win the first match. It's not every game you manage to score four goals, he says.
– But usually he scores at least one, a satisfied and proud coach interjects.
